Cairo, 1984. In a modest house by the Nile, fifteen-year-old Aya Hassan is growing up — a Muslim girl who dreams of more than the life set out for her by poverty, tradition and the place where she was born.
Aya loves her family and has a deep faith in God, but she also longs to learn, to discover the world and to get an education. Her greatest dream is to go to university in Poland. Along the way she meets people who help her believe that dreams really can come true.
An important part of her life becomes her friendship with Miriam, a Coptic Christian. Although religion and tradition set them apart, the two girls discover that friendship, respect and kindness can be stronger than division.
Aya will have to face her own fears, her family's expectations and a momentous decision that will change her life.
Dom nad Nilem is a story of family, faith, friendship, growing up and the courage to reach for your own dreams — a reminder that sometimes we have to leave home to understand where we truly belong.
